What about a Honeysuckle? or some Clematis? Or both, of course. If you choose an evergreen Honeysuckle, the laeves won't drop in the pond.

Any of the group 1 Clematis are fast growing, Montanas White or pink. cover very quickly could put one of each and the birds love them for cover.

Clematis is quite easy to grow I would say the three golden rules are Never plant on chalky soil they don’t like it always plant where they have a minimum of 2 feet.
depth for roots to grow down and plant with the compost level no more than 8cm below the soil level.
You describe another clematis you bought as having a flower that looks like a potato flowers. Are you sure it’s not a Solanum. It's evergreen and gorws like crazy! small star shape flowers white or purple with yellow centre.

Yes, Juliano - check out my 'garden' section on my page and you'll find lots of photos of my Clematis, including C. montana 'Broughton Star'.

Your climber does sound like a Solanum! Did it come through the winter OK? Mine suffered a bit, but it's still alive, so I hope it will grow back. I've just pruned it.
