I bought two Cannas (one green leaf and one red leaf) earlier this year and have them in pots. Both doing really well and flowering. What do I do aver the winter, will they be ok left outside?

I dunno about where you live Webmoose, but here in the North East, they are treated as an indoor house plant. If in doubt, it's maybe better to overwinter it somewhere.

Oh thanks both. Its a bit warmer down here on the south coast but probably not enough to make much of a difference. They may well come and live indoors over the winter or maybe a spot in the garage. I didnt consider they could be house plants! I have some pictures of the blooms. I'll see if I can work out how to upload them.

Ok. Managed to post some pictures but couldnt work out how to get them up the right way. still, you get the idea. Each plant is about 4ft tall

If you bring them indoors, don't forget to check for creepy crawlies otherwise they'll be all over your house:)

I had 2 cannas last summer and decided to risk them staying outside (very close to the coast in Cornwall). They did not survive the winter, though the dahlias that I thought would be equally tender did.

Good point Sheilar. Thats not something I'm keen on finding!

Thanks Beatie, Cornwall is generally considered to be the warmest place in the UK I think. They will definately have to have a new home in winter I think. I avoided Dahlias for just that reason but I couldnt resist these!

Now that's odd about dahlias. I haven't grown them myself but my friend has dozens of them and she leaves them in the ground all winter and they have done OK so far (they've been in years, getting bigger and better each year). Strange!

My Grandfather used to grow Dahlias and religiously lifted them every year for years and years. As I remember them, they were always fab! Maybe its the luck of the draw!

I am from melbourne australia. i have many cannalillys 45 diffrent varieties. they do not like winter time at all i cut them down to ground, as soon as spring come's i feed them reguraly about every 4 to 6 weeks, they love dynamic liftter or any compost matter. and they also love full sun good luck

Thanks Danielcharles. I don't think I'd go as far as having as many as that - it sounds like hard work but I bet they look great.
Mine have full sun and I've been feeding them rergularly and seem to be doing well on it.

I think Australia's quite a bit warmer than England:)

Quick update on the cannas. Rain this weekend spoiled the blooms but both plants have new blooms on the way!
Def keepers!
