Thankyou Julien,i thought so as well, but have been told it it not that it is a Cordyline australis.Any idea how it could have just 'sprouted' up??

Or could they be the eaves of a Crocosmia mine is a C 'lucifer' and the leaves look like these. any sign of long stem with flower buds on?

Hi DRC,no,there are no flowers at all, just very long pointed sword like thick leaves.I have googled yucca plants and Cordyline and the yucca looks a match to me,but my friend is adamant it isnt!! lol Its a mystery to how it gre in the first place!!

Have a look at my Crocosmia 'lucifer' I put a photo on of just the leaves its on page 10.

I would still say yucca, a sure sign is that on the very tips of the leaves there should be very sharpe small needles.

The reason I suggested C 'lucifer' is because I thought Yuccas grew from a central stem and had more erect leaves? and the photo looks more floppy and does not look as if its on one stem to me?

Drc I'm baffled - your pic does look like Happyg's but it isn't at all like my crocosmias

Steragram if you look a few pages on its in flower, quite a few members on here have them, I expect you have the smaller more invasive Crocosmia (Montbretia)? At least you can now see why I wonder if this is the same as mine.

It looks to me like a Yucca recurvifolia plant, and that it was well established before the soil was turned. Did you own this garden last summer, Happygiraffe? Was this area a neglected corner smothered in weeds?

Thankyou for the replies.Drc,i looked at your photo of the 'lucifer' and its not the same as mine. The leaves on mine are more 'rigid' and thicker.
Tugbrethil, yes until the soiled was turned it was a weedeed area.I had 2 massive conifers cut down to stumps(30 ft high) and their branches extended a good 6 ft into the rest of my garden.when removed this left a large area that was uncovered.I had the soil turned, laid down chips, and up popped the plant.

oh and yes,had the garden for 4 years, and only when trees removed did it appear.

@ julien.yes i have just been out to look and indeed it does have very small needles at the point of each leaf!! Mystery solved, thankyou very much!! now,any idea how it just appeared?? lol

Thats good, enjoy

It must have been there, stunted and hidden in the weeds and conifers, all this time! This year is the first that it has had a chance to shine. It probably won't bloom this year, but next summer you should get a tall plume of 1 inch cream and plum colored flowers.

Drc, I looked at the crocosmia page and mine is just like Pansypotters. It isn't montbretia for sure!
