I have a beautiful beech hedge which i want to keep but it is too deep and takes up too much space in the garden. how and when do i cut it back to make it thiner but retain its foliage in future.

I would trim it back in autumn, taking away no more than a third, though to be safe a quarter of the over all size of each tree. That way you will have a thinner but healthy tree.
