i am growing potatoes in bags and as soon as the leaves grew to half way i covered the leaves with compost.is it ok to do this and will the leaves find their way to the light or will they rot

The leaves will keep growing up. If you are growing early potatoes you need to look at lifting then soon. As they are in a container you can just wiggle (very scientific expression) your fingers down into the pot/bag and see if you can feel any tattties then just remove enough to eat. We grow our tattties in the ground so just lift a root at a time :-)
