We were recently given a Meyers Lemon plant in pot. Until a couple of days ago all was well and the stems were in good condition. It was left out overnight and the photo shows the result. We've had a similar thing happening a month or two ago to young shoots on a vine. We shall be grateful to anyone who can shed light on the problem.

This looks like slug or snail damage. Put a few pellets around the stems. Trim it off just below the damaged bit and it should resprout from the leaf joint.
