Now is the ideal time to dig it up and place in a large pot. Then I would keep it somewhere sheltered until Mar/Apr when the ground starts to warm up. Unless Jan is particulary mild, otherwise the ground will be far to cold and possible frozen. Could end up killing the said plant.

Yes, Tricia - I agree with Trees. Just as an addition, to make sure that the roots don't freeze in a cold snap, wrap the pot in bubble-wrap, even in that sheltered place!

Thanks for the photo - it did help to see the size you were asking about before. I can't work out what the shrub is, though.

hi i agree with Spritz, and Trees, again not sure on the shrub, it looks a bit like a white broom, but they usually only flower in spring, are the white bits flowers? if not and they are little leaves could even be a dwarf Salix, i have two that look like this at a distance, but no flowers, just pretty little leaves, that are all but fallen, - very pretty whatever it is.

It does rather look like a small winter flowering cherry. Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis.

May I say I agree Tricia and apologise to you if you were dealt with in a less than polite manner by any member. I am fairly new on GoY myself and have been dealt with politely by everybody, whatever question I asked or attempted to answer. (Except by Majeekahead who shouts at me. Lol.)

I don't know what it is Maj. but I don't think it's a Salix.

Good thought, Owdboggy. I have one - only 'Rosea' but it is like a 'whip' and hasn't grown much since it went in 15 months ago. It is in flower, though. but the 'tree' is not at all the same shape as the one in Tricia's photo.

Tricia, how old is this 'tree'? Do you know?

ooohhhh you little horror John, lucky i know how to take that comment! and yes you are proberly right, does look more like a Winter Cherry.

I wondered if it could be a Blackthorn or Sloe, flowering out of season. Another Prunus anyway.

16 Dec, 2008

My local wild sloe bushes, which I depend on every year to get my fruit for my Christmas litre of sloe gin, have not produced a single fruit this year.

Not relevant and really boring (unless you are sloe ginless) but it allows me to ask... Tricia, does it have big spiky thorns?

John.

Blackthorn has white flowers and Milky did say this was pink, originally.
And John, none of ours (and we are talking here of 10 miles at least)produced a single usable sloe. Good job I do not drink alcohol is it not?

I will get my fourpenith in and agree with Owlboggy ,from the photo(could you get more of a closeup?) it looks like a winter flowering Prunus.
