I get plagues of them here and an insecticide (as awful as they are) will be the only answer because when these are left to their own devices they will devour every plant in their sight.
I've had shrubs stripped of their leaves by these little swines and this is the only action to eradicate them properly.

These days i use Provado because it's far and away the best value for money, compared to the cheaper things that need more frequent applications.

I use insecticide very very little as i encourage friendly insects to the garden - but, needs must at times or your time, (hard earned) money and efforts will be lost in no time.

As for the windburn, move it asap because winds (warm or cold) will frazzle the new and the older growth, these need to be in sheltered areas.
I'd love to have them here but i live on a hillside and the winds, although south westerlies and warm, are killers to finely dissected foliage.

Many thanks Louise1 for your advice. I will move the acer to another area. It was brought as a gift for me however I live in the South and am in an open area with fields surrounding so I think I will just have to move around the garden until it looks happier. I will get some Provado as suggested to eradicate the little fellows. We have some real mature oaks in the garden and I have noticed similar looking grubs hanging from the branches on long single strand webs.
