Two of my clematus are flowering at the moment but the leaves are going brown from the bottom up.Do they need more watering?

Maybe it needs more water? but it could also be clematis wilt Can you post a Photo

Some varieties do that, and the best thing to do is to 'disguise' the brown leaves and stems with other plants.

It's unlikely to be wilt, as the plants collapse from the top downwards. Sadly, I've seen this twice this year!

Do you know which Clematis they are?

I read on here recently that there is a top wilt and a wilt from the bottom up Spritz, one caused by drought the other by virus wilt. Sorry to hear its happened to you I have had it in the past but I find as the plant gets older it stops happening.

I don't know who said that, Drc - clematis wilt is a specific thing that causes shoots to wilt from the top downwards. Wilting from drought is entirely different and affects all plants. Most likely this clematis is a viticella/jackmanii group one, and if it wasn't hard pruned by mid February, that would account for what's happening to the lower leaves. Do you know what variety your clematis is, Suesimpkin?

Not sue I follow you Bamboo.

I don't think my 'Vyvyan Pennell' would agree with you about getting older, Denise - she's about 6 years old now, and wilts on a regular basis! Older, but no wiser. :-((

That's disappointing Spritz, my 2 of my 3 12 year old Clematis did it for the first 3-4 years and have never done it since. I just cut them to the ground straight away is that what you do?

Yes, Denise - the same day.

I plant Clems deep, so usually, they send up new shoots the following spring. Do you remember that my 'Mrs Cholmondely' got chomped by snails 4 years on the trot? Well - this year, she grew well, and had five buds. Then she collapsed one morning. I couldn't believe it! (I suspect she was so shocked at NOT being gobbled, she fainted. lol.)

I think I'm fated not to see her flower....:-(((((

It took 5-6 years to get flowers on one of mine Spritz and since it hasnt stopped.

I'm sure she'd do well, if only she had the chance. I've only seen flowers once, in her first year. :-((

Thank you to you all for your help with my clematis. My friends daughter has the same problem and her husband has said to try spraying with Rose Clear and then a month later a fungus spray. It is worth a try. What do you all feed clematis with?I have five clematis at the moment. They are so lovely. Will try and take some pictures and get them posted. :)

I put a handful of blood, fish and bone round the root areas in early spring, and mulch them with compost as well. Then they get a liquid feed monthly in the growing season.

I wouldn't spray your clematis at all - the brown leaves are either because you didn't prune it right back down to 2 buds (about 8 to 12 inches usually) or they've got a bit dry at some point. No point throwing toxic substances around unless its unavoidable and essential.

Thanks Bamboo for the advise. If it is a nice day tomorrow I will take some picture of the worst one.I pruned all the clematis really hard as I even thought had over done it.Looked at the really bad one today and new leaves are appearing from the base.It is really weird as it seems to be affecting three of them now.

What liquid feed do you use Spritzhenry ?

24 Jun, 2011

Either Miraclegro, or tomato food.

I'm afraid that some Clematis have the bad habit of getting brown leaves towards the base of their stems. You can't do anything about it - spraying them won't help. I 'disguise' the stems with other plants, as I said. Be careful not to disturb the Clem. roots if you do that, though. They don't like that at all.

Thanks Spritzhenry. It has been an awful day here so not taken any pics. The brown leaves seem to spread up the plant so I am really worried.Need new camera batteries.Did manage to plant some herbs in small pots to keep my rabbits going.

What are they - the Clems, I mean?

26 Jun, 2011

Hi Spritzhenty.Comtesse de Bouchoud which is in the ground and has new growth coming. Also Dancing Queen which is in a pot and another in a pot but my hubby lost me the label to that one.It starts off with brown mottles on the leaves which eventually become brown and shivelled. Many thanks for your advice.

I have Comtesse de B. I'll have a look tomorrow and see what her stems and bottom leaves are like.
