calling all protea specialists...

Asked on 10 Mar, 2008

This question is on Protea mundii

I have seen this plant and it has intrigued me...I must know more about it. So my question is: Is it possible to grow this plant successfully outdoors...or will I have to treat it as a houseplant?
I live in N.A. approx 45 degrees North Latitude.

Proteas will only take a few, if any, degrees of frost. I'm in southern UK and trying protea cynaroides (generally considered to be the easiest one to try) but growing it in a pot and overwintering it indoors. In general, proteas need very free draining, acid growing medium, low in phosphates and rainwater (not tap water).
A useful website is www.trevenacross.co.uk which will tell you what we can try over here and what it can tolerate.
