Do I need to pinch out tops of runner bean plants at a certain height, to encourage lower growth?

I have never done that. I just let them get on with it and seem to get a good crop each year

I pinch mine out, always have as I think it gives me bushier plants

THE SNAILS DID IT FOR ME BEFORE THEY EVEN REACHED ONE FOOT. NO PROBLEM AS I NOW HAVE BUSHIER PLANTS WHICH I PREFER.

you can do if you want. I tend to top them just to stop them climbing all over.
You may get more side shoots. keep them well watered and well fed.
