Looking for 1 all round feed for shrubs and plants in garden .

What can I use?

I prefer alfalfa meal (3-1-2 formula) for most things, but a lot depends on your soil chemistry. If you have somewhat acid soil--pH of less than 6.5--a higher phosphate level--the middle number--would be indicated.

Not sure that's available in the UK, Tug.

I use blood, fish and bone, Kath - just a sprinkling round the root areas, and 'tickled' in to the soil.

I use Miracle Grow for everything.
When you use this product follow the directions exactly and this makes a massive difference to the plants.

I fork in Blood fish and bone and add Epsom salts, plus every 2- 3 weeks I use Miracle gro, for the roses I use Toprose and add Epsom salts. I am on heavy clay and it lacks Magnesium hence the Epsom Salts. But dont use it unless you have this deficiency as it can make clay even stickier. The soil in my wooded area is not clay and I have never needed to add Epsom salts to that soil.
This year I am trying a plant food the Bamboo recommended its granular and has an X in the name - hopefully it will come to me?

So looking for a feed I can mix with water.

Sounds like this one one would suit you best then ? Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food.

There are quite a few liquid ones on the market but I suspect that Miracle Gro is the most popular.

It's certainly the easiest - in my opinion.
The directions specify applying once a week from the beginning of March to September.

Oh dear, Louise! Can you imagine me using that once a week in my garden? Eeeek!

Lol Spritz bit like the fourth bridge!

Spritz, in a garden your size you'd have to just choose selective plants.

Don't you Brits grow alfalfa? ; )

5 Jun, 2011

Nope, Tug.

Denise, I'd need to be a millionaire, too! LOL.

Louise, I do use liquid feeds i.e. either tomato food or Miraclegro on my containers, but only feed roses and clematis with b, f & b otherwise - and not weekly by any means!

I'd have to agree with Spritz's blend then, though i would use less bone meal here, with our alkaline soil.

It comes in a pack ready mixed, Tug.

Oh. Well, even though my ignorance has been showing, it has been alleviated at the same time. It's not sold that way in the western USA, though we do have bone & blood meal combined--both beef. I use that as a starter fertilizer, but bone meal is incredibly slow acting in our alkaline soil.
