Red Delphiniums

Asked on 9 Mar, 2008

I have a reference book that has pictures of the trials (greenhouse at Wisley) of a red delphinium...Title: Perennials...the definitive reference, by Phillips & Rix. My question: this book dates from the 90's and I'm wondering if there is progress on these trials that anyone on goY may know about? UP DATE.....
found seeds, very expensive...still trying to find info about the variety
Fox, as it is listed as perennial...the genetic source has to be D.cardinale (thanks Andrewr) and cardinale probably came from d.hutchinsoniae which is a southern California wildflower which enjoys hightemps and an arid landscape in which to grow. The flowers are more larkspur like than the floriferous fronds of the Delph. we all know and love. They have fewer flowers, it seems, but perhaps a mass planting will help make them more of a statement than just punctuation. So...Eureka! I have found it! finally.
Famous last words!! Once found it was a sobering cold reality that has finally put the stop to my interest in these flowers... being very close to a wildflower and accustomed to a totally different climate I have to wonder why the Canadian seed company who sold these seeds decided to market them in the first place. The seed was treated exactly as directed but NOT ONE SEED GERMINATED!! I am going to contact the seed company and make an enquiry... I had similar germination rates from another packet of seeds for Nicotiana sylvestris...I have grown these from seed before with excellent results but the Aimers seed did nothing... so if I should come across some other seeds in the future I may be tempted to try again...
