Yet another shrub to identify!

Asked by Spritzhenry on 7 Mar, 2008

This one has grown in the verge of our lane - its parent is growing over the wall in a garden. Please does anyone know what it is? It's facing west but the big one is facing east! This is a close-up - the flowers are quite small in little hanging down chains.

Well, as this must be a seedling, it's only about 2'6" tall by the same spread at the moment but the parent over the wall is up to 6', and either it has spread along about 8' or is more than one shrub - and looks as if it has been levelled off parallel to the wall, so could grow even taller given the chance. I can't ask the occupants what it is as they are only renting the house. I'd love one in my garden, too! Have you got room for 'just one more', Andrew? lol

Gotcha!!
It's oemleria cerasiformis (syn osmaronia cerasiformis), common names oso berry, Indian plum, Oregon plum.
A suckering shrub up to 8 feet all and eventually forming a thicket 12 feet across. Male and female flowers are carried on seperate plants; the male has showier flowers and the female carries purple berries (like small plums)
And no, I haven't got room for it :-(

Andrew - what a star you are! Definite ID - thank you! I wonder if it has 'suckered' under the wall from its parent plant to the lane verge? I still like it and will stick my nose in it next time I go past, as its flowers are meant to smell of almonds!
