I think you are referring to the soil texture? Soil is comprised basically of three materials - clay (the finest particle), silt (middle grade) and sand (course). If you've got a lot of clay, your soil will tend not to be too well drained, while too much sand results in very dry soil that is too well drained! Adding organic matter is the recognised panacea for just about any soil texture proplem. Hope this helps...
