Delphiniums, can anyone tell me why my delphs have big gaps in the flowers, the buds open then there is about a six inch piece of stemp then another bud. they are usuall so clumpted together, they had all their feed after flowering last year, help.

Yes, if they wilt while the flower stalk is forming, bands of the flower buds die.

thank you for replying no they havnt gone brown, but I think you are both right, they must have wilted at some point and the flower stalk hasnt formed properly, I was away for a week during this period, and my neighbour isnt as vigilant as me, that is certainly worth knowing tho. many thanks.

Most likely a reaction to the dry conditions this year - delphiniums like moist, rich soil which does not dry out completely.
