I was given these seedlings by a friend. They were planted in those little plug things. I thought I would put them into bigger pots until they got a bit bigger as I didn't want the kittens ruining them. They have been kept in a sunny position and watered regularly. They were green until a couple of days ago. What have I done wrong? Not sure which Gernaium they are but I was told they would be dark pink with black centres.

Advice please?

What did you use as compost in the pots?

Levington Multi Purpose Compost

Crikey, rough looking stuff, remind me not to buy that one... Have you had a sudden drop in temperature in the last couple of days, specially overnight? If the compost is okay (and I'm not sure it is) and its not something they're absorbing from the soil, the only other thing I can think of is that they look like they do in autumn, so either drought or sudden cold.

There has been a very cold wind the last few nights, must say I hadn't noticed how far down the temperature went. If I buy different compost tomorrow and change it, will this make any difference? or have I lost them for good?

I suspect they'll recover given time, but I really don't like the look of that compost. I know they sell rubbish these days because its peat free, but for baby plants it doesn't seem suitable. If you've got some John Innes No. 1 that'd do, otherwise suggest, if you have a chain of Wickes anywhere, buy their multi purpose in a green bag, not blue.

you also say they are in sun, geraniums are happier in some shade, so perhaps less sun would help too.
agree the compost seems a bit 'rough' for small young plants. having said that they self seed into the bark chippings in the garden.

Good point, I missed that entirely, Seaburngirl - put them somewhere shadier.

I watered them earlier and moved them into some shade and shelter. I will buy some John Innes No 1 tomorrow and change the compost, no Wickes within 1 hour drive from here so B&Q here I come. These plants came all the way down from Inverness and I wouldn't like to loose them.

Use JI No. 2 if you can't get No. 1, should be okay, just has a stronger mix of feed in it.

How do I say thanks?
