Cordyline australis - new plant from side shoot?

I have a Cordyline Australis and it is throwing out a side shoot can I prune it back to the stem and can I grow the shoot as a seperate plant.

Nothing to lose What happens if I prune and the plant dies.

Highly unlikely you will kill the main plant if you do it carefully. Plants are very resilient, unless you starve or actually poison or pull out a plant of nearly all sorts they are great survivors.
