Can anyone tell me why my Bergenia leaves look all tatty and like large cabbages instead of looking nice any shiny as they should please - have grown them in a previous garden with good results

If they're like mine, they are getting ready to hand over to the next generation and they can take a while to do it so look off colour for a long time. If there are plenty of new leaves beginning to appear you could remove the worst ones. Also, I apply a good quantity of water and this seems to perk them up no end.
