Removing Blackberry plants?

Asked on 12 Oct, 2008

How do you remove these pesky intruders? Our garden backs onto some wasteground on which they are rampant. I am fighting a constant losing battle to prevent them coming through my fence & ruining my flower bed! Can someone help???

If you can't get at them to dig them out then spray them with a systemic weed-killer and after spraying some leaves put a plastic bag over them tied or fastened with an elastic band. The best time to do this is when they are still young in spring and you may need to do it several times a couple of weeks apart.

Watch the plants in your own beds though but hitting the soil won't hurt.
