Well i divide my carnations all the time and they're all ages when they get done - so i'd say yes.

yes and you can nip out the tips,plant them in pots and grow new ones,i even take the the side shoots off bunches my hubby buys me from the shop,they root really easily

You will never believe it but sometimes if my mother received or bought a bunch of carnations or pinks, she would actually take oull off some of the side shoots that didn't have flowers on them and put them in jars of water to root. Then she would set them in a pot before putting them in her garden later and they always grew - a cheap way of getting more plants, eh ?
