Galica Roses

Asked on 10 Oct, 2008

My Nevada Rose has grown upright just like my Scharlachglut (Scarlet Fire) yet in my Rose book it shows a picture of Navada a large round bush as wide as it is tall, that is why I am wondering if there are two types or am I not pruning correctly. Thanks Spritzhenry for your reply. to my previous question.

Is the plant quite young? It will bush out as it matures and gets extra branches. I prune out a third of all branches to ground level each winter and this keeps the plant rejuvenated and encourages fresh growth from low down, this then makes it 'bushy'. Be brave when pruning, cut out all dead and crossing branches, then take out a portion more as mentioned above. all overlong branches should be shortened to prevent wind-rock damage over winter. Don't leave pruning too late as once new shoots start to emerge you won't have the heart to cut them off and the bush will get lanky.
