What sort of hedge is it? Most are very hardy and can be cut any time especially privet. However the more you cut the more the ends will thicken so some time you may have to cut severelly back as your hedge may become too thick or not grow well from the bottom and only from the top. Never cut into very old wood unless you are prepared for a long recovery it will eventually but may open up the area for a while. Thye only hedge I know that should be cut in August is conifer leylandii Also people can be allergic to the sap off these as you cut from the little bits you have cut off. I am the only one in the family who can cut ours!
