compost and soil.

Asked on 29 Sep, 2008

I have 3 plastic bins of compost I made from leaves etc and peelings etc. Some of it has been there for a few yrs so is now rotted down.
I'm wondering if this is a good time to spread it on to my new topsoil which is rather clayey. I hope it will help the new soil.
But I don't know if I should wait till the spring.
I'd be grateful for any advice.

autumn and spring is a good time to add compost (and maybe grit) to clay soils - the compost will help all the soil creatures break down the clay - much easier than with double digging!

I would put it on in November ,as Hoya says the worms etc will pull it in. The problem is although it should improve the structure of your soil, with the amount of rain you get in your area any nutrients will have gone by Spring.Nevertheless it is very good stuff to use.
