We have moved into house with long border of Cypress Trees for garden privacy. What can we plant in same border for colour. The Flowering Currant that was there has died, we would like Hydrangea and Buddleia but dont know if the trees would leave enough nutrient in the ground for these plants.

Nothing will grow within 3 or 4 feet of a conifer hedge, so better to plant the shrubs you want elsewhere. You could stand potted plants in front of the trees if you really want some colour there.

Hydrangeas like moist soil and wouldn't stand a chance. The common buddleias will grow in the most unlikely places, like on the sides of abandoned buildings so perhaps you could try just one and see if it survives - especially if you can widen the border a bit and add some good compost. Euonymus fortunii emerald and gold would probably survive, and is cheerful all the year round, though no noticeable flowers.

How do I say thanks?
