i have block paving in my back garden and would like grass can i lay turf on top of the sand when pavers are up

If its just sand on gravel or hardcore, then i doubt it will survive no matter how much you dig. You would need to remove hardcore and import plenty of topsoil to fill in the 'hole' and also to mix with sand

Sorry, I should have said to scrape off the sand and any aggregate before digging over - good job Nickyt08 is awake!

Not a good idea - best to dig over the area, incorporating some fertilizer first, then level off, tread it down, rake over and re level and then lay the turf.
