My dicksonia tree fern had a lot of lovely new fronds on it as I kept it in over winter. I put it back outside recently and we had a frost last night and the fronds have gone really dark green and droopy with crispy ends. I have brought it back inside but what should I do? It had two old fronds from lat year and about four new beautiful ones which are now damaged. Will it recover and what can I do to help it? Thanks!

the best you can do is keep it in till all the frosts have gone . another month or so i guess . it should be alright but it mite not look so nice this year is all .

Thankyou very much! Should I cut off all the damaged fronds or just wait until they die back?

just weight as the fronds will just maybe grow with a brown edge but they dont bye nature put out a lot of leaves so id put up with them as they will become part of the trunk the year after and it will look fine again . its only my advise but thats what i would do .

Because you've kept it inside, you will need to harden if off before leaving outside all the time again, so when you first put it back outside, you should have moved it back in overnight, then back out again the next day for a longer period, then back in again overnight, until after about ten days (pick a mild night) you manage to leave it out all night. Even so, any frosty nights will cause some damage to existing fronds - any growth present is very tender because it's been in warm conditions, and will be specially vulnerable to frost.

Ah thanks so much I wish I had known that before! I'm kicking myself now, it looked so beautiful before but now all the fronds are dark and shrivelled. :(

I'm sure it'll grow more - the plant is not dead, even though the fronds are damaged.

Thanks! I hope so, I seem to have the fingers of death as far as plants are concerned and I've always wanted a tree fern.

Thanks, I brought it back indoors for now and cut off most of the dead fronds and gave it some water. I can feel at least three buds in the crown so I'm hoping there is still life in there. :)

it will be ok .posotive thinking .

Kittykat, it would be much healthier for the plant if you started hardening it off now, getting it accustomed to being outside - leave it out for an increasing number of hours daily, move back in in the evenings, over ten days or so, then pick a mild night and leave it out all night. Better for the fronds to start growing outdoors than in, or they'll be too tender again.

Ah okay thatks, it's a mild day so I'll stick it out for a while.

It now has two lovely new fronds and another one is in the process of uncurling :D

Maybe march was too early to take it out Kittyk. I have just brought mine out, earlier than usual but there fine, they can take frost down to -5.. keep poking your finger into the crown, you will feel more fronds, i counted 10 last week on my smaller tf and 4 are already unfurling, the old fronds are still on and looking good, so i might leave them this year.. Good Luck with it :)
