hello could i dig up two large new zealand flaxes?they are getting battered by wind and need rehoming to my mums sheltered garden!

How big is big? If they're mature plants, I think you'll have a job, and they might not survive.

they are atleast six foot and one flowered last summer, they just look wind beaten and untidy.

Up to you, of course, but I really don't think you could move them successfully. You'll have to decide if they're an eye-sore, and then give it a go without much of a chance, I'm afraid. You don't sound particularly fond of them!

Sorry to disagree, Spritzhenry, but I'm pretty sure they will move, if you do it this way. At this time of year, you can dig up large Phormiums, cut them in half or quarters, depending how big the root ball is, and then pot up the sections independently, or plant them into prepared holes and keep well watered till they recover. So if you've actually got the strength to get them out, that'll work, just transfer sections, not the whole plants if they're large.

Thanks, Bamboo - I'm sure that Lindaloganberry will have a go! Not sure I could or would, though.
