Small holes will be mice or voles.

or stoats-- we've has them going into the rabbit burrows...( hurray)

I'd be surprised if a stoat leaves a burrow much smaller than a rabbit's!

We have lots of holes around too and I speculate on what could have left them - bumble bees, mice, voles, slow worms, snakes? I don't put my finger in to find out... 8-0

We get mole tunnels under my loose laid paving - they're about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. Good worm-hunting territory, I suppose.

Hmm....1 1/2 inches sounds a bit tight for a mole, but what do I know. We have pocket gophers, here! : (

I'm sure they're mole tunnels Tug, there (are) WERE molehills either side of the path. Perhaps my memory of the diameter is a bit dodgy? I found two mummified moles on a path in my last garden a few years ago. Found one and disposed of it, then the other appeared a few weeks later. They were pretty skinny.

Well, like I said, I didn't know. You learn something new every day! The hard part is remembering it!! ; }

"The hard part is remembering it!!"
You've got it there Tug! Do you feel as if your head is completely full so there's no room for anything else sometimes?

How big are pocket gophers?

A little longer and skinnier than the pictures I have seen of moles, with a bigger head. They leave holes about 4-6 cm wide. Unlike moles, they actually eat plant roots. You can't call yourself a gardener here unless you have watched a carrot or turnip disappear underground, and subsequently declared war on the gophers--think Caddyshack!

lol! How enraging, they sound a lot worse than rabbits.

I've got this picture in my head of an old cartoon-- probably bugs bunny-- where the carrot disappeared downwards.......

I have the same mental picture Pam!
Yes it's a nerine, I have some Nerine bowdenii, including a few white ones. I bought those and planted them and they've sulked for a couple of years, but one or two deigned to flower last summer. I'm hoping for more this year.
