My variagated privet hedge has turned a very dirty colour and is covered with a dark dust... can you tell me what it is... we are not near any roads?

The snow we had may not have been clean and now it has thawed the dirt from it remains on the leaves, try washing it off with warm soapy water in between showers on a wet day. Could you put more detail on your profile as to which county you live in etc.? it helps when answering questions.
