pruning japanese acer which has spread too large weeping type 3 feet high

can i prune this japanese weeping acer shrub which has spread covering a large section of the border?

Poaannua - I thought acers bled quite badly if the sap was rising? If I had to cut one back, I'd do it immediately after the leaves had fallen

Yes prune it , but wait until Spring shortly before the leaves are due to appear... Excessive little shoots in the centre sometimes need thinning to make sure the main shoots can breathe easy
