i'm starting a garden from scratch how do i prepare the soil to ensure there will be no dry patches of brown grass once the garden takes?

If you dig out all the big stones and get the weeds out, then rake out the small stones, firm the soil and rake to a fine tilth before laying the turf, it should all grow the same as long as you water it thoroughly. Have you got dogs which might cause brown patches? If so, when they wee, water the area at once to dilute it.
