Plants for a shady garden.
Plants for a shady garden.
Asked on 17 Sep, 2008
I am new to this and have a garden that has been cleared of fir trees but still contains a large cedarwood fir tree. I would like to plant some shrubs but also have a small bed where I can plant bedding plants in summer and bulbs in winter. Any ideas about what to plant would be very welcome. Thank you

Vinca major and minor too. Also Hostas. If your soil is acid, Rhododendrons and Azaleas would grow there. Good luck with it!

Pieris are good value and colourful at unusual times. Hypericums also, and euphorbias. I would add cyclamen to Chris's list of woodland plants.

Impatiens (Busy Lizzies) would be ideal for summer bedding - they actually prefer shade

Woodland plants would work. Primroses, bluebells, Aconites, Foxgloves, Ferns, Anemones, Ajuga reptans for ground cover. I'm sure others will give you more suggestions. Welcome to GOY,
