Bamboo made a very good answer to someone with an identical problem earlier today. Here it is -

Cheers but what do we do with the bent braches...leave or cut below the bend?

Is that new growth I can see sprouting from the base of the trunk to the right of the picture? If it is and its healthy, the tree will regrow. You will need to chop back past the bent areas - but much better to wait till April to do it, longer if you can bear to - you may find the top doesn't grow anywhere, yet it sprouts lower down the trunk, and then you'd need to cut back to that point and not just beyond the bends at the top.

Bamboo,
If the Cordyline starts sprouting further up the trunk & I cut above it, will I have toseal the trunk.

Hmm, that's a good question - mixed opinions about that, some people do, some people don't. If you want to, you could use something like Arbrex, but I wouldn't be chopping anything right now though.

Sorry Lee, the point of this site is its public, so phone numbers, addresses and emails are not shown here. Anyway, I'd have you to charge you for a personal consultation like that, given I'm a professional.

No problem

I advised my friend cut her Cordyline back last Spring and she had a row of small plants grow at the top and the bottom of the main trunk. You just have to wait.

I've just checked the botom of the tree and it is very dark brown. When I push the brown section in there seems to be a clear liquid coming out.Is this OK?

22 Feb, 2011

It's not really OK, as such - it's oozing liquid as it's been damaged by frost. There's not a lot you can do except wait for the weather to warm up so that what's left of the plant can decide whether to grow or not. Then you can cut out the dead stuff and let the remainder grow.

The hopeful bit is that there's already some growth at the bottom of the trunk. Just wait til April as Bamboo said above.

If the trunk's oozing at the base, you will probably find it needs to be cut down, but again, wait till April.
