Hi Scotkat, I did answer your second question, but not sure if you got it.In my early days of gardening I worked with the champion of the world 1947, we grew onions 61/4lbs. 19 inches round. These were alright for show but the taste was awful.
My best results came from well manured soil, seed bed prepared and sown in March, take out the drills and sow thickly, you have the chance of thinning out spring onions for salad and the main crop will be about the size of an egg. The best seed was Bedfordshire Champion.
Cheers Doctor Bob.

Hi scotkat,
Dig over the bed now adding bonemeal 2ozs. to the square yard to the surface.
In October when the weather is open, put in your sets.
Cover bed with peasticks to keep off the dreaded blackbird.
