Do indoor plants give off pollen which can cause an allergy in some people?

Answers

Any plant in flower will give off pollen, except sterile ones and doubles where the anthers have become petals. So unless the plant in question is flowering then there should be no problem.

Interesting question.... and interesting answer :o)))

And yes people can be allergic to the pollen of indoor plants and to the pollen from cut flowers.

Thank you. A member of my family gets allergic rhinitis and his house is full of plants. they seem to be all green ones but maybe some of them flower at some time.

Then keep an eye on the plants and remove the flowers.
Remember also that some plants shed tiny hairs which can also cause allergic reactions. For example Fremontodendron californicum.

allergic rhinitis usually caused by consumption of dairy or eggs, and certainly polluted air - people who live in London suffer with this, the numbers rise every year (including me...)

Agree with Bamboo allergic rhinitis is not usually caused by plants. Pollen is more likely to affect folk who are asthmatic or have breathing problems.

I was vastly amused at the allergy clinic last year - they 'tested' me for several common substances (10 pinpricks, wait ten minutes, useless tests) and then told me I wasn't allergic to anything. When I then said oh yea, so what makes the inside of my nose swell in May, why can't I take penicillin without coming out in hives and so on, he said, 'well you're not allergic to anything we tested for'. When I said what's causing the rhinitis then, he said 'well, it's out there isn't it' gesturing to the window - he meant the pollution. Dear oh dear, is it too much to expect coherence from doctors these days? Made me laugh though, and everyone else I've told about it.

Yea gods and little fishes... we know the pollution is out there but what is the solution? My eyes and nose start streaming if I am within half a mile of oilseed rape in flower - means we have to plan our walks accordingly.

Thank you for all your comments. I now know a lot of people are having rhinitis at present. I am told that there is grass pollen, tree pollen and fungal pollen which is about at the moment.

Won't be any tree or grass pollen currently, Casso - that only happens when the respective plants are in flower. Plenty of fungal spores around though, lol!

Is there ever a time in the year when there are no spores to cause allergies?

28 Jan, 2011

Probably not - you can't win, there's always dust and dust mites around, and either of those is a major cause of rhinitus. Only thing I've noticed is I sneeze a lot more in spring, summer and autumn than I do in winter.

How do I say thanks?
