When is the right time to prune back?

If you don't want seedlings all over the place, then dead-head it and keep dead-heading until late autumn, then cut the stems back to the base to tidy up. If you don't mind and can let the birds have some seeds, then just cut back as above.

Just one of my Ladies gardens I tend to has a large fennel bush needing tended to .

Thanks will leave some for the birds.
