Hi everybody sorry i have been away so long it has just been one of those years. My question to anybody who can help is this can i transplant 2-3 year old yews they have not got a large root system and alot have already died, which i feel is down to bad planting as they have still got bags on root ball. The roots have not pushed through this. Also when is the best time to transplant? If anyone can give me any advice that would be fab thanks :)

Agree with Vincent. if you've not had frost yet I'd get them out of their bags now and in the ground. if the ground is frozen then I would plnat them into fresh compost in a slightly bigger pot but what ever you do the bags have to come off.

We transplanted 6 yews from a hedge where a gap was being made for an entrance. The trunks were about 3 inches across! We cut them down to 18 inches high and removed most of the side growth. They were moved in April and are now growing again! So go ahead in Spring! Remember to keep them well watered all next year.

Evergreens are best transplanted in Spring (up to April). If the bags are still on them, you certainly have the reason that they failed. You should have no problem transplanting them at that age.
