After flowering. Do not cut back beyond green shoots as they will not regrow from leafless stems.
Just as they're finishing flowering trim off all remaining flowers . You can use a hedge trimmer for this.
I trim my heathers every two or 3 years abnd I find that enough. Purists will suggest pruning yearly.
