Just in case any "beginner gardeners" feel tempted, there is currently an offer from Gardeners World to receive a free Acer, just paying £4.50 postage. (they found me on email) When you look closely, this will be in a 9cm pot which means the "tree" will be tiny! Methinks there are better offers to be found, but it's up to you.

Hi
I agree that you can get a better deal than this offer I have had a lot of plants from eBay and I have always done very well with them the advantage is that you can purchase plants that are rare and not available from most garden centres from eBay etc but unfortunately the postage can be the killer a good example I purchased a 6ft nectarine tree from eBay and the tree was £15 with another 12 P&P.So I suppose they is both good and bad with mail order

Is that with Thomson and Morgan again Sheila? I got caught out with their Buddlieas just recently. Been advised by people on here that they're not up to much.....

I have both the Acer and the Buddleia mentioned above,
I bought three Buddleia Buzz plugs early this year but was aware they were plugs, and the Acer was described as being in a 9cm pot, for me the pleasure is watching the plant grow or at least seeing if I can keep it alive. However I do get annoyed when I see pictures of plants in catalogues that show mature plants when in fact you get a tiny scrappy thing when delivered. I believe it has even been reported that some pictures are single branches inserted into pots of compost to represent the plant.

MMMM, I agree, But it's not only GW, How about the pics in some of the free catalogues in magazines. They give the wrong impression. I bought a Paulownia tree 9 years ago and it was a 2' stick in a 7cm pot. It's 17' now and going strong. (Even after a dig up and journey to the new house 7 years ago.)

Interesting. Cestrian makes the good point that sometimes a small plant is what you want. Some of these offers are fine - we can all make up our own, grown-up minds! Often they then add on other things that you can buy at the same time to tempt you, but I think what they really want is your name and address so that they can swamp you by post in the future...

You're right, Sheilabub. I got caught with the tiny buddlejas and one of them didn't survive. I also bought a Christmas box, which was quite expensive and a very mean little plant. I saw them in a GC later, much bigger and quite a bit cheaper. Haven't bought anything from T&M since but still get swamped with their catalogues! Mental note: Write to T&M!
