I have just bought a Japenese Anemone, just like my Nan had. I was wondering if it would survive the winter outdoors, or if I should bring it in and plant it out in Spring.

Thanks a lot in advance.

No Alex, don't bring it inside.
It's a perennial and needs to be planted out.
If you do it 'now' while the soil's still got some warmth in it it will put its roots down and get going - it may well die down over winter but its roots are still alive, then you'll see new growth in the spring.

My book says that late flowering ones are best planted in early Spring to summer, so you're probably right to keep it somewhere frost free over winter, or at least very sheltered. Not in the house though, or anywhere heated.

O.K, thank you.

Would it be O.K, in its pot on the windowsill with a small section of a garden fleece over it, or should I put it in the ground, and cover it with a small section of fleece?

i have 4 of those bought at home depot last week, planted around my oak tree but had to dug it out again [ thanks to other gardeners advice....don't want to harm my 50 y/o oak tree]...just replanted them yesterday under my oak tree still but deep w/in the ground, i was hoping that it would survive, i was thinking since it's a little cold, they will not perish and will be preserved, still flowering right now, i know they bloom late summer based from my observation...i have three pink ones for 3 yrs now...

I believe you live in London Alex - if you have somewhere sheltered, say against the house wall, in a southfacing spot, out of cold winds, I'd pot it up, stand it against the wall and cluster other potted plants around it for added shelter. A housewall is a warm place to be over winter, as long as its not exposed to northerly winds. Clustering pots together is a good idea too, they all help insulate one another. Otherwise, fleece if you prefer.

But not 'inside' the house on a windowsill, outside maybe.

Thanks a lot, and I did mean outside on the windowsill.

I have just planted it outside. It has some buds on it, so I look forward to seeing it flower.

Next year will I need to keep at least one deadhead on to collect seeds or will it come up next year.

I just wanted to check, because I did this to a cosmos, and now I can't find white seeds, my local garden centre only do pink shades.

?Japanese anemone? They are as hard to kill as Bindweed and Ground elder. If they like your garden they will take over so I would not worry about taking seeds (which would give you a load of poor specimen anyway).

that's interesting Owdb, I'd agree with you about the pink ones, but not my favourite white one so far ( : O (( ) but then again it is also in a less favourable spot in the garden, less sun.

Even the white one is a thug in this garden!

And so will Alex's become, once its established, lol!

I may need to give it love and attention and a bedtime story, then when it grows up and becomes a stroppy tennager trying to take over the garden, I will have to take away priviliges and enforce discipline.
LOL

I will not have some stroppy plant treating my garden like "dirt" and its behaviour may earn an "grounding". It can take that sort of behaviour "outside".

I have got to stop waffling on. LOL

Ha ha, very funny Alex - hope it survives the winter first!

Fingers crossed.

I will have to get a nice thick duvet and tuck it in of a night to keep it toasty warm.

Do you think some warm milk or cocoa might help?

LOL

Dunno about the anemone, but the cocoa would certainly help me, lol

lol it will b fine ihave 6 of em i love them

1 Nov, 2010

if you're making cocoa please make some extra for me, that sounds like a great idea.

Cocoa all round then.

I better pop down to the supermarket and buy some.

LOL

And don't forget the sugar...

2 Nov, 2010

I'll put it on the list.

This is going to turn into a cocoa convention instead of a question about a plant. LOL
