I have the same problem. A usual cause is mushroom spores contained in a new compost or manure you added to your soil. This year is very bad due to the favorable weather conditions. Just pick them up and put them in the dustbin. Do not eat them as they might be poisonous.

Hi serentide - its the time of year, the spores will have been there since last autumn and now the time is perfect for them to, ahem, mushroom! I've had a lot in the last week or so too. They won't do any harm, and I rather like seeing the little 'fairy rings', but if you find them ugly don't worry - they will be gone in a few days.

If you have pets or young kids about , it's worth checking a mushroom identifyer website to make sure you have no poisonous ones, though thats quite unlikely.

Most mushrooms are gone in a few days or a couple of weeks but there is a large fairy ring in one of my customer's gardens which has been fruiting for 6 weeks.

My mushrooms grow as big as a dinner plate within a couple of days from the time they appear. The very first appeared in mid august. New ones appear nearly everyday and I had another six yesterday. I put them straight into the dustbin. What a waste if they are edible.

"Big as dinner plates" strikes a chord. I would try to get them identified as I think that they could be very edible!

Hello Bulbaholic. I have just found them on the internet. They are edible and are called Agaricus Augustus. What I have thrown in my dustbin matches exactly the specimens on the internet for both pictures and description. Being a very cautious person, I will still not touch them in case of a mistaken identification.

You could try a small piece and if it nearly kills you not try anymore!

I would definitely advise finding someone who does know their fungi before actually eating them, Costakis.

How do I say thanks?
