Unknown plant

Asked on 26 Aug, 2008

I'm not sure where this plant came from... I'm hoping that someone can tell me what name to put to it...from the attached photo...it is definitely not a mint...the stem is hairy and round...the leaves are opposite, narrow. almost arrowshaped with very short stems.. med. green, furry, and not aromatic. It grows very tall about 3 feet.... in fullsun and becomes floppy if disturbed.

Sorry. Lori, I've drawn a blank in all ref.books. Maybe it doesn't grow in the UK. The flowers look similar to a small Filipendula I have, but the leaves don't.

It looks like spearmint - Mentha spicata - growing in the shade makes it a bit floppier

If you pinch the leaves, does it smell like mint, Lori? I'd love to know if Celandine has ID'd it!

No, sorry Celandine.. it is definitely not mint... I have three kinds of mint in my garden... it's leaves are lanceolate, opposite, and the inflorescence is a pannicle. the flowers are tiny with about ten stamens... have a closeup of the flowers I should post...

Hi Celandine and Spritzhenry...I'm not trying to keep up the suspense...I simply cannot find a picture to put a name to because I have never seen this plant before...and have no name to attach to it so I could begin a search...I see why you mentioned filipendula Spritzhenry the flowers are quite similar but the leaves are definitely quite different...and the leaves are very similar to mint, Celandine... but if you check them out closely you will see that they are not ovate but arrowshaped.. I'm still trying, I think the next step is rip out a specimen and photograph it with a white background so the details are easily seen...will let you know as soon as I find out...thanks ladies, I appreciate your input.
