Does anyone have suggestions for plants that will grow happily under a large, old walnut tree? I believe they emit a herbicide that many plants will not tolerate. Any suggestions gratefully received.

You could try planting variegated ivy as far as possible from the trunk and then train the stems to cover the ground underneath the tree. Ot try pots of shade loving plants.
