is it possible to use small onions from this season as onions sets next year? If so what do i do with them to store them? I have some small onions that for some reason did not get any biggger than the onion sets that you buy. I might have planted them a bit late!

You can leave them in the ground thats what would happen in the wild. if you do lift then they need to be stored in a cool place with a good airflow around the onions. inspect regularly and remove any that are growing or going mouldy.
personally I would pop the into casseroles whole etc or even pickle them.
