G'day All!
I am considering which main crop pots to get this coming season. I favour container growing. I had King Eds and Desiree last time and most of them were quite small albeit tasty. I have read that maybe main crop are not the best for container growing. Your valuable opinions would be welcome.
As a rider, I am now harvesting some Nicola so can recommend planting Christmas potatoes.

Have you ever tried Fingerlings? You must. They are fun & delicious (more expensive at the market). All kinds of colors & flavors. Some varieties to consider include:

'Russian Banana, Purple Peruvian, Rose Finn Apple Swedish Peanut, All Blue, Princess La Ratte'

Thanks Bathgate. I have never heard of these but will certainly take a look!

Personally, I would only plant earlies in containers as they mature the quickest and can be harvested when they are at their most expensive. Maris Bard, Suttons Foremost or perhaps a waxy, salad potato. Well done for managing to grow potatoes for Christmas without having blight to bring them to a halt early in the Autumn.

Thanks Jimmytheone. Yes, I have heard first and second earlies are the best for containers. I intend to get Nicola again as the Christmas ones are lovely. I will certainly look into the ones you suggest.

I did well with Pink Fir potatoes in containers. They are a weird shape and you wash them rather than peel them but a tasty, firm potatoe. Similarly, Mayan Gold did well in containers. These are the devil to boil as they quickly go to mush but we found that by putting them raw into the casserol pot with other vegetables cooked them nicely and made a one-pot meal

Thanks Bulbaholic: I will research these as well.

I agree with Bulbaholics choices. Both are excellent potatoes. I particulary liked the Pink Fir apple because there is no waste. You dig them up and wash them then forget about the need to have them a uniform size just put them in the pot and cook them. If you can find a 'Potato Day' near you I would recommend you go along to one, to see for yourself what is on offer. The best thing about them you is that you buy the potatoes individually so you can have 10 different ones if you have ten pots available. You can also talk with the stall holders or fellow buyers about any potato you think you might like. Look up dates on -------- http://www.potato-days.net/

I second Pink Fir Apple - rather knobby but a lovely flavour.
