Bulb planting. Got lot of bulbs waiting to be planted out but the weather is not cooperating! ๐ŸŒฌ๐ŸŒงโ˜”๏ธ Itโ€™s either very windy or far too wet. Suppose ground is still quite warm although weโ€™ve had some cold nights. When is the latest I can plant them out? Got alliums, tulips and crocus to plant out. Thank you

Hi, with the allium's, it depends on whether they're the bulb type, or the rhizome rooted type, bulbs should be planted in autumn, [which only started today, despite the met office], so you can plant them up until November, Rhyzome types should be planted in spring, Tulips you can plant up to December, Crocus should be planted in Autumn for the spring flowering types, or late summer for the Autumn flowering types, Derek.

Getting similar weather here. I got some 99p washing up bowls & filled them with a mix of garden soil & compost. That way I can get the bulbs into soil comfortably indoors & then put the containers out to grow until the weather is okay enough to plant in final position.
Just punctured the bottoms for drainage & carried them out to roughly where I want them to grow

Now that's a good idea! Like your thinking. As it's not raining at the moment I'm going to pop out and see if I can get some bulbs into the ground today. Must also pick some blackberries down the road to make my family's favourite apple (from our garden) and blackberry crumble. Mmm....

I often start bulbs/tubers off in plant pots that I have saved from other things. they have plenty of drainage and it means you can easily lift them if you want to replace then before the foliage dies down. I do it with tulips, lilies dahlias etc, the pots are all the same size so they can go into the same spot.

make sure if you do use a washing up bowl that there is adequate drainage or the bulbs may sit in waterlogged soil and rot.
