If you know what an insect is then identification is easy. This one, I don't have a clue. We spotted it running across the patie where it climbed half-an-inch up the table leg and went to sleep. It looks like a short winged moth. Could it have just emerged from a chrysalis somewhere and its wings are yet to develope?

In some species females have stubby wings or no wings at all. there are many months with this sort of colouration. if it had only just emerged the wings and legs etc would be too soft for it to run. so I think sending a image is a good idea. The natural history museum also do id's.

It looks like a newly emerged Angle Shades moth.

Well done, Longleaf, it is indeed an Angle Shades as I was informed by the County Recorder. A migrant to our area but this must have been from eggs laid by a previous generation. I have just added a second picture taken three and a half hours later at 1030pm last night.

Intriguing. I found a similar one on line but it is an American species - but it shows it's possible anyway.
It is Pachysphinx occidentalis.
