New to gardening. How do I help this palm, it’s looking a bit sorry for its self.

What would I do? Well I would cut all those lower leaves off, cut them off close to the trunk, avoid tearing them off as this looks ugly, they look far better cut to the trunk so you get the look of a pineapple, leaves naturally die back over time and so you gradually get that lovely architecturell trunk, I don’t have much dealings with these but I suppose all that snow and hard frost laying on the leaves for some time can have an affect, possible protection could be afforded in future when really severe cold is forcast.

Nothing really wrong, trachycarpus fortunei does tend to look like this especially in exposed gardens. Just tidy it up as Julien suggests. Perhaps clear some of the grass from around the stem and a feed will give it a lift.
