This little guy has been tucked away in a far corner for at least 10 years, more likely 15, so I decided to smarten it up and put it in a different pot. Then I thought - is it the right time of year, and is it ok putting it in a mixture of all purpose compost and my own compost.
I gather it’s a Conifer Goldcrest and it’s about 3 ft 6 ins tall.

That’s great news S, I have bucketfulls of both composts in the greenhouse and will do the job tomorrow.

when you do repot plant the conifer at the same level in the soil/compost as it is now. Also use a lot more soil/compost so that it almost reaches the top of the pot, the it is currently in looks half empty.

Actually M I’ve already dug some of the existing “soil” out, to help me upend it tomorrow. But thanks for your advice, every little helps.

My daughter in the USA has just started taking another degree and she’s had to memorise the Latin names of 120 trees. Thanks to her I know just one - Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana

Like when I took plant taxonomy in college. I and my classmates garnered some strange looks, wandering around Flagstaff and muttering "Latinoid". Fortunately, since it was a college town, no one called the "men in white"! :)

well its not ideal if the soil/compost is frozen. but it will be grateful for the extra root space and fresh compost.
